With its approximately 400 NaturFreunde houses, the environmental and leisure association offers nature-friendly accommodation at a low price – both for sustainable leisure activities and nature experiences as well as for holidays and further training. The newly published 27th edition of the directory of NaturFreunde houses in Germany presents current photos as well as updated contact information, equipment features and leisure options of the approximately 400 association houses, family holiday homes, hiking and nature lodges, city houses and campsites of the NaturFreunde in Germany.
NaturFreunde are a politically-ecological leisure association with its historical roots in the workers' movement of the nineteenth century. The association is not politically engaged, but understands itself in the historical context as "left" in the sense of a counter-movement to elite societies. The aim of the founding generation of the NaturFreunde movement was to make nature accessible to working people, and this remains the goal to this day. In 1895, the first NaturFreunde came together in Vienna to explore nature as a source of recreation for non-privileged population groups and to acquire property in order to meet, further educate and organize activities.
An important component was the right of free access to nature for all, against the citizen-private interests of the existing hiking, mountaineering and sports clubs, which denied membership to workers. To date, the NaturFreunde movement has grown worldwide to over 350,000 members in 21 countries.

Now the new current directory of all German NaturFreunde houses in the 27th edition has been published.
NaturFreunde Houses
Another term that encompasses everything from a simple, unmanaged mountain hut to campsites to large hotel properties with immediate access to nature. They all share the idea of not offering luxury hotels, but rather enabling affordable and nature-oriented leisure activities, especially for groups and families.

"NaturFreunde houses are often located in the middle of nature, often in protected areas and unique landscapes, and they are very diverse: there are simple hiking lodges for self-sufficient people to large hotels with full board, from campsites to city houses, from boat houses to climbing halls. NaturFreunde houses are ideal for people who value socially-ecological meeting places and an informal atmosphere," Strasser continues.
There are over 700 NaturFreunde houses worldwide, around 400 in Germany. Of these, 235 houses offer overnight accommodation, 62 have camping options, 37 have caravan pitches. 194 German NaturFreunde houses have self-catering kitchens, 118 are fully equipped. A total of 7,819 beds are available for guests.
"Our NaturFreunde houses are a very important part of our over 100-year association history," emphasizes Stephan Schenk, NaturFreunde Federal Group Leader for NaturFreunde houses. "They were built with self-help and collective self-help, and are still mostly operated voluntarily today. This makes affordable pricing possible, which is important to us. Because we want to make holidays in our own country affordable for people with low incomes, especially families."

An extensive cartography helps with geographical searches, clear registers quickly lead to the desired house, and a pictogram list makes orientation easier.
